Giving Back To The Homeless
2007 Grant History Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning, Inc. JCAL is a nonprofit that offers visual, performing, and literary arts, arts educational and artist’s programs to encourage participation in the arts and to contribute to the cultural enrichment of the children and adults of Queens and the greater metropolitan area. It is the only multidisciplinary arts center of its kind serving Southeast Queens. Each year, thousands of children and adults participate in the Center’s in school and onsite arts education programs, multicultural performing arts events, and contemporary visual arts exhibitions.
Teen Spot is a free after school/summer program that provides over 200 hours of hands-on arts training for 13 - 19 year olds in the areas of spoken word, dance, architecture, and the visual arts. Through hands-on studio projects, research and writing assignments, field trips, and classroom discussions, Teen Spot provides opportunities for teenagers in Southeast Queens to develop their artistic, academic, and social skills; expand their cross-cultural understanding; and increase their levels of self-confidence and discipline. The program continues with a five week summer intensive where students may focus on either visual or performing arts.
Teen Spot provides youth in the Jamaica, Queens community with many benefits including opportunities to:
Explore music, theater, dance, or the visual arts through workshops and programs, or refine their skills through intensive study of one particular artistic discipline; Improve their reading, writing, cognitive, and critical thinking skills, as well as their academic readiness; Increase their cross-cultural understanding by participating in arts activities in their community; and Increase their self-confidence and levels of focus and discipline; learn about teamwork and how to express their critiques and opinions in a productive and positive way.
